At the beginning of the war Woolwich employed 10 women, by the end of the war there were an additional 24,030 women. Lilian Baker, who has become a legend, had been in the forefront of women's involvement form the early days of the war

Triangular pinned badge/ brooch was issued to female workers "engaged in the manufacture of war or other urgent work" aged 16years and older and worked more then 2months. (1914/5 were lapel stud) No form of certificate was issued (unlike the male badges)

At a curve in the riverbank is the Gridiron which was built as a roll-on dock for 100 ton guns to be loaded onto special 'Gog or Magog' barges After manufacture in the Arsenal the gun would be put on a railway wagon, taken to the dock, and rolled (wagon and all) directly onto one of the barges for transport to Shoeburyness or wherever. Although this dock is now overgrown it is in reasonable condition and it is hoped to restore it.

Awarded The Victoria Cross in 1885 (Gazetted 12 May 1885). For action after the "square" was broken during a native attack. Now kept in the Royal Artillery Regimental Museum, at Woolwich. 

The back was wrongly engraved as Gunner Albert SMITH.

 

Buried on the 12th January 1932. The grave was left unmarked until 1986 when a memorial was raised by his 176(Abu Klea) Battery.

Originally named Well Hall Estate. To house senior and skilled Woolwich Arsenal workers. Well Hall Road, SE9. Linked Woolwich to the north and Eltham in the South. As part of the LCC tram way system.

1925
The Royal Arsenal Cooperative Society (RACS) bought the 1250-home Royal Arsenal workers estate at Well Hall  from the Government, which it then renamed the Progress Estate. 

1975
Became a conservation area, granted because of its unique architectural character.
